What do you love most about the ocean?

What would you like everyone to know about you?
I've always loved the ocean. I grew up near the ocean in West Palm Beach, Florida, learned to scuba dive, went to University of Washington to get my bachelor's degree in oceanography, then headed south to the land of Trojans (USC) for my PhD. While there, my research took me aboard Calypso, the famed wooden vessel of underwater explorer and co-inventor of Scuba, Jacques Cousteau. I sailed on that noble ship twice, once from Tahiti to New Zealand, and once around Moorea. Following a PhD in Biology, I went to Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory for a two-year post doc where I continued work on natural fluorescence, the natural faint red glow that plants emit when photosynthesizing. But don't go out and look for it on your plants. It's too faint for human eyes. After a few fits and starts in the environmental industry (Ecomarine, Harvey Universal), I made my way to Fullerton Community College, where I now work full-time teaching oceanography, meteorology, marine biology, and occasionally, geology. I love teaching almost as much as I love the ocean. So there you have it...oceanography, writing, professing. There's lots more...but you'll have to tie me to the mainmast and beat me with a smelly fish before I'll tell.

Barack Obama says...

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do.

Interested in Reef Tanks?

PROFESSOR SEAN’s REEF TANK PROJECT

To those of you who indicated an interest in helping with the reef tank, please read below. Then let me know via e-mail or in class dates that you might be available. Thanks!

History: Professor Sean’s Reef Tank project got its start as part of a Marine Biology class he taught in Fall 2005. The 125-gallon tank was donated to the college by Tropical Reef, an aquarium store on State College and La Palma. The tank’s life support and monitoring systems, as well as… Continue

A Classmate Asks...

A very good question: Do you need to bring your book to every class?

(while this question pertains to campus classes, online students might benefit from the answer).

The answer: YES.

I say that not because we will always use the book in class, but because:
1. We often use the book to complete activities.
2. I often ask you questions in class discussions that give you an opportunity to look something up and bookmark it. If we talk about it in class, you can bet that it's important.
3. If you h… Continue

The Beauty of It All!

And by all, I mean all of your beautiful home pages!

It's quite simply amazing how technology is changing the landscape by which we live, work, play, and learn (hopefully, not in that order). It takes a village to build a nation, and this is our little village here.

I aspire that we, together, make the world a better place by sharing with each our knowledge, passions, and our heartaches, particularly where the world ocean is concerned. Everyone is a teacher here, because every one of you have… Continue

Welcome to Exploring the World Ocean!

Ahoy, ocean lover! Welcome to Exploring the World Ocean. (Are you ready, kids?)

Imagine, if you will, that you live in a giant pineapple under the sea. Your neighbor is a fun-loving but academically limited starfish, your boo is a space-suit-wearing squirrel, your boss is a fast-food-flipping, pile-driving crustacean, and your enemy is one of the most important group of organisms on the planet! If you can imagine that, then this is the place for you. (It doesn't hurt if you can sing the song, e… Continue

I loved the article from the Associated Press. Thanks for posting it. I think it is simple enough wording that even my kiddos can grasp its content.
Thanks

Hey thats a cool action figure of Nemo you have on the online group. Just a little bit of trivial trivia, it was sculpted by sandy collora and years ago I interned for him, then later was hired by him to storyboard a low budget horror flick and music video..... he never paid me for music video though.
